NCCash Match Treasurer Folwell talks about how we are returning money through the NCCash Match Program A Department of State Treasurer (DST) initiative will speed up the return of millions of dollars to the rightful owners through a free, streamlined process. With the NCCash Match program, unclaimed property owners do not need to take action to receive their money. The Unclaimed Property Division will research records and identify qualifying claims of $5,000 or less. Each week, notification letters will be mailed to claimants, and a check will be issued in 6-8 weeks. Below are some frequently asked questions about the Unclaimed Property Division and this special effort to get money in the hands of North Carolina residents. NCCash Match FAQs What is unclaimed property? Items such as uncashed checks, forgotten bank accounts, utility deposits, life insurance policies, stocks, bonds and other funds that have been abandoned and no owner can be found. How did the Department of State Treasurer get my money? The funds were turned over to our office by a company that did business with you at one point in time. When that company could no longer contact you, by law they were required to send the money to the State Treasurer for safekeeping. If I receive a letter from the Treasurer about this special program, what do I need to do? If you receive one of these letters, no action is required on your part to receive the funds unless the letter contains incorrect information. If your name has changed or is misspelled, or you no longer reside at the address to which the letter was originally mailed, please contact our call center at 1-866-NCCASH-1 (866-622-2741). When calling, please reference the letter and provide the Claim ID indicated on the letter. Otherwise, in approximately 6 – 8 weeks after you receive the letter, a check will be mailed to you at the address indicated on the letter. How am I able to receive these funds without filing a claim? At the Treasurer’s request, the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation allowing our office to pay certain claims without requiring a signed claim form. This authority will allow us to use other automated tools to verify ownership and more quickly return money to the rightful owner.
